María, a Kaqchikel Maya peasant girl, lives with her parents on a coffee plantation at the foot of the Ixcanul Volcano. Bitten by the "grass-is-greener-on-the-other-side-of-the-mountain" bug, she befriends a coffee harvester who wants to run to the USA. But he just gets her pregnant and disappears.
